Variegated gave Americana is also commonly referred to as a 'Century Plant,' but the variegation makes unique. Century plants got their name due to the old wives' tale that these majestic agaves bloom once every 100 years. It does take quite a long time to bloom, about 20 years (depending on seasonal conditions from year to year).
Once she blooms be prepared for a dramatic show. These send up an incredibly tall and thick flower stalk-- as thick as a small tree, with heights up to 20' tall. The bloom stalk will produce smaller branches off the main stalk and these branches blossom with tufts of yellow flowers.
The bloom period is short, lasting about three weeks, after which the mother plant will die. These types of plants are called monocarpic, meaning blooming is the last thing the plant does in a normal life cycle. Most monocarpic plants will offset prolifically during this period and the offsets can be separated from the mother and safely replanted.
Variegated Americana can reach mature heights of 6' tall and have a spread of about 8' wide. Century plants make a beautiful focal statement in any landscape and are very low maintenance.
Americana is recommend for zones 8-11. Variegated Century plants are deer resistant, salt tolerant, drought tolerant and cold hardy down to 20°F.
